Recently, I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I’m not sure what it is, but I’ve been pretty restless and I don’t know about you, but there is nothing worse than waking up looking tired after a bad night’s sleep. When I’m tired, my whole face gives me away, and I spend the next day feeling rubbish. So, I’ve been trying to take steps to ensure that I don’t wake up feeling and looking bleh. I’ve found the key to this is by performing a little pamper routine that I have perfected before I go to bed.
This routine ensures that I wake up looking a little less tired even if I’ve had a restless night’s sleep. Today I thought I’d share the things that help me fake looking like I’ve had my beauty sleep, I thought this may be helpful, especially with Christmas just around the corner which means later nights, thanks to Christmas parties and end of year deadlines.
So, let’s start shall we!
Having a Pamper Shower/Bath
So, something I’ve found that works really well for me, is having a nice chilled shower or bath before bed. This helps to relax me which then, hopefully means I’ll get a good night’s sleep. I tend to wash my hair, exfoliate, shave and this all helps me to feel better when I wake up in the morning. I always find my skin looks a little dry and dull when you’ve had a bad night’s sleep so this helps to keep my skin feeling smooth which does make a difference.
Drinking Some Water Before Bed
Although it may mean you need to get up in the night for a wee, I’ve found that drinking some water before bed, does help how my skin looks when I wake up in the morning. Water obviously hydrates you and I feel like making sure I’m hydrated before bed means that my skin feels plumper and fresher (if that makes sense) it also means I wake up feeling a bit better too as there’s nothing worse waking up feeling groggy.
So, I know this won’t be for everyone, but something that makes me feel so much better is waking up with a tan. I tend to tan just before bed, put on some cosy pjs and head off to sleep. I know that even if I have a bad night’s sleep, I will at least waking up looking bronzed and that always makes me feel better!
A Sleeping Face Mask
Whenever I have a bad night’s sleep or go to bed too late, you can always tell by my face. My skin always looks dull and feels dry which then makes me feel 100x worse.
Recently I’ve been trying out the Yes To Sleeping Masks which are face masks that work on your skin whilst you sleep. Pretty cool right? There’s four masks to try, but I’ve been trying the Yes To Cucumbers Calming Sleep Mask which, thanks to soothing cucumber extract, keeps your skin cool all night and you wake up with your skin feeling smooth and refreshed. My skin always looks so much better in the morning after using the sleeping masks, they make me look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep which is a definite winner in my book.
The masks are single-use and all have rich cream formulas that absorb easily and gradually overnight during your skin’s natural repair cycle. You rinse off in the morning and voila, your face is feeling and looking fresh for the day ahead.
I tend to apply my normal skincare routine, then add the Yes To Sleeping Mask last and head off to sleep. You can use the masks alone, or on top of skincare like I do, for more effective penetration. They are cruelty free and have no parabens, SLS and silicones in them either. They’re available from ASOS and I’d 100% recommend trying one, your face will thank you!
I think I’m going to be stocking up on the gentle Yes To Cucumbers Calming Sleeping Mask and the Yes To Coconut Moisturising Sleeping Mask for when I’m doing my course of Roacctutane later this year as think these will be great for when my skin is feeling very, very dry!
Now once I’ve applied all of these, it’s now time for bed. However, if I find that I still need a bit extra help to look all fresh faced in the morning, I do the following three things:
My eyes are always super red after I’ve had a bad night’s sleep, they feel tired, and make me look a little like a zombie which to be honest with you, isn’t the look I am going for. So, I swear by eye drops to help brighten my eyes. I use the Eyedew Sparkling Eyedrops and have done for years. They whiten your eyes and also help to make them feel a little more refreshed. I tend to add a couple of drops just before I start my makeup and they make the world of difference!
Concealer, concealer, concealer
Dark under eye circles are almost a neon light saying ‘Hello! I’ve had no sleep!’ So you want to cover them up as well as you can. Although I can never seem to 100% cover under eye circles, I help to brighten and cover them with two concealers. I’ve been using the L’Oreal Infallible Concealer palette recently, which I use to cover the dark circles and it has full coverage so it does a pretty good job. I also use a yellow toned concealer to brighten up the area even more. Yellow is a good colour to balance out blue and purple tones, so really brightens up the area under my eyes. The Barry M colour correctors are really good for this!
Finally, to ensure fully that my eyes are a bit brighter and awake, I’ll go in with a nude eyeliner on my water line which helps to brighten up red, tired eyes. Although I’ll have already added eyedrops, the eyeliner will help to just add an extra bit of brightness and mean that no one will ever tell you’re tired from looking at your eyes!
Finally, after this routine, I should be looking a bit more awake and fresh faced. No one would ever know that I’ve had a bad night’s sleep 😉
I’d love to know if you have any tips for faking that bright eyed and bushy tailed look?
